Mid bullet game I managed to click the edge and resize my board much smaller. Awful feature, honestly pretty rare I'm sure, but it's impossible to size up now.
Can be disabled in your settings under lichess.org/account/preferences/game-display To resize the board you can click on your username (top right corner) → Board geometry → resize using the slider.
