Based on your rating and my experience, you need to play more games, solve puzzles, study checkmate patterns (anastasia's mate for example), study pieces checkmates (rook and king vs a king for example, it may be the most occuring of them all after queen and king mate).... etc.
I mean, studying openings is great but it won't help you much unless you reach something like 1800 or 1900. I'm not saying don't study openings but rather don't focus much on it. don't focus on say Sicilian lines but rather know opening principles.("Discovering chess openings" is a nice book for a starter)
