3D feedback - angle

+1 to #1... angle is a problem..that s why i dont use 3D pieces.
It's amazing how people overlook the simplest things that make such a huge difference to the experience. In that first video, how the video makers decided on black pieces on black squares, I just don't understand. They get the angle right, I agree, so it was a good example of that, but please people, learn from the color disaster in that video.

White pieces are much better. Luckily they didn't choose those bright white pieces with that board, or every piece on the board would be difficult to see.
I'm considering re-doing the pieces, but it's not that simple.

These pieces are pre-rendered with an isometric projection. Lowering the angle will not necessarily have the desired effect as pieces will become hidden behind the pieces in front. And trying to perform a perspective projection is extremely problematic as it will require a completely different approach.
Glad to hear you're considering a re-do. I can identify a few issues at the moment, such as the King and Queen pieces being generally similar, a lack of contrast between the two sides (for most sets) and odd sizes for the pieces.

As to the last point, one person on /r/chess was discussing it a while ago (I lost the post) and recommended examining these guidelines for tips: http://www.chessusa.com/chess-pieces-size.html. But clearly, this needs attention from an expert on 3D perspective, if such a job title exists.
I'm pretty sure the only way we can get a functional perspective projection is to perform real-time 3D renderings with WebGL or something. I don't think anyone on the dev team has experience with this.
I keep coming back to the idea that natural angle 3d chess would be really great to have on lichess. There is already a 3d possibility on the site (although the angle makes it horrible), so I did not completely understand why it should not be possible to make a similar set with a natural angle.

But I am not a computer specialist. Can somebody explain what makes it so hard to make natural angle 3d chess?
